How to Core Drill: A Step-by-Step Guide for South African Contractors

Core drilling is one of those jobs that looks simple until you're standing in front of a wall with the wrong bit, no water supply, and a rig that's starting to wander off-line. Whether you're cutting service penetrations, coring for HVAC ducting, or drilling test cores for concrete strength testing, getting the technique right saves you time, blades, and callbacks.

Here's how to do it properly, from setup to finished hole.

What You'll Need

  • A core drilling machine (handheld or rig-mounted, depending on hole diameter and depth)
  • A diamond core barrel sized to your hole diameter
  • A water source and swivel (for wet drilling) or a dust extraction shroud (for dry drilling)
  • An anchor and stand, or a vacuum base for smaller diameters
  • Safety gear: eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and a dust mask if drilling dry
  • A spirit level or laser guide to check your starting angle

Step 1: Plan the Hole Before You Drill

Confirm the exact position, diameter, and depth before you set anything up. Check what's behind the surface — rebar, electrical conduit, or plumbing can turn a routine core into a costly mistake. A cover meter or existing building plans will save you here.

Mark the centre point clearly and, if you're using a stand, mark the anchor bolt positions too.

Step 2: Set Up and Secure the Rig

A wandering core bit almost always comes down to a poorly secured base. For anchored rigs, drill and set your anchor bolt first, then torque the base down until there's zero movement when you push on it. For vacuum bases, test the seal on a clean, flat section of surface and don't trust it on rough or porous concrete.

If you're working overhead or on a wall, double-check your stand's clamping pressure — gravity and vibration will find any weakness in the setup.

Step 3: Start the Hole Slowly

Begin at low speed with light pressure. The goal in the first 10-20mm is to let the diamond segments cut a clean guide groove — rushing this stage is the number one cause of bits wandering off-centre. Once the barrel has bitten in evenly around its full circumference, you can bring the machine up to normal operating speed.

Step 4: Maintain Steady Pressure and Water Flow (Wet Drilling)

For wet drilling, keep a consistent water flow across the segments — this cools the diamond, flushes the slurry out of the cut, and extends the life of your core barrel significantly compared to dry cutting. Too little water and you'll glaze or burn the segments; too much and you'll wash away the cutting efficiency without added benefit.

Apply steady, even pressure. Let the diamond segments do the work — forcing the bit only generates heat and wears the segments unevenly.

Step 5: Watch Your Slurry and Sound

The colour and consistency of the slurry coming out of the hole tells you how the cut is progressing. Thick, grey slurry means you're cutting efficiently. If it thins out or you hear the pitch of the motor change, you may have hit a void, a rebar, or a harder aggregate band — ease off and reassess rather than pushing through blind.

Step 6: Retract Regularly to Clear the Cut

On deeper cores, withdraw the barrel every so often to clear slurry or dust from the cut and let water or air flush the annular gap. This prevents the barrel from binding, especially in reinforced concrete where cut debris has less room to escape.

Step 7: Breaking Through and Removing the Core

As you near breakthrough, ease off the pressure — punching straight through at full speed can chip the exit face or cause the core to drop unexpectedly, which is a safety hazard on elevated or overhead work. Once through, use a core puller or a punch bar to free the core cleanly, especially on deep or reinforced cores that may still be gripped by rebar.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting too fast — leads to an off-centre or angled hole that's difficult to correct
  • Insufficient anchoring — the most common cause of bit wander and premature segment wear
  • Ignoring what's behind the surface — always scan before you core, especially in occupied buildings
  • Running dry without dust extraction — bad for the tool, worse for your lungs
  • Not regressing/retracting during deep cores — increases the risk of the barrel binding or overheating

When to Retip Instead of Replace

If your core barrel is cutting slower than it used to or the segments are visibly worn down, it doesn't always mean a new barrel. Retipping — replacing the worn diamond segments on your existing barrel body — is a cost-effective way to restore cutting performance without buying a new tool from scratch. It's worth checking before you write off a barrel that's still structurally sound.
